"Keep ya head up"

Recently in health class, we've been learning about 'Body Image'. As part of this we were set to task to choose a specific line or verse (from a song we'd studied in class) that had resonated with us.

Omlet

Another delicious recipe we learned in food tech was a recipe to make an omelet. There were five main elements which were all the ingredients to make our omelet. They were, eggs (of course), red onions, capsicum, bacon, and cheese. One element that really stood out in my creation was the onions which I did not like. In some areas, the onions really overpowered the rest of the elements and so that was the only unpleasant part of my meal.

SOS Concepts

Image result for modernisation
Image result for globalisation

This week in social studies I learnt several new concepts. One concept was globalisation. Globalisation is the the act of an event going internationally viral. For example many brands and companies get a lot of publicity or public influence in the world. This shows that the company is very wealthy and entertaining.

Another concept that stood out for me out of the many concepts was; modernisation. Modernisation in my own words is when things become modern and modernisation is really for the present time. E.g we would call the present time the modern days because of modernisation and the growth of technology throughout the years.

Made in Taiwan

Walt: write a detailed summary of a documentary called 'Made in Taiwan'
Image result for made in taiwan documentary

Nathan and Oscar are two men who travelled to various countries; in search of clues to the locations that their ancestors might have come from. Before they went on their journey they took throat swabs to be tested so that they could receive information about their ancestors.
They visited four countries and found so many similarities between the tangata whenua (people of that land) in comparison to the Maori people. For example; Rarotongans speak quite a similar language as they do, whereas the Taiwanese people look as if their Maori. Even the female wear moko-like prints on their face as a Taiwanese tradition.
One of the most significant experiences in their trip was getting to be in an archaeological dig for the very first time. This was an important part of their journey because they got to see an old human skeleton and had learnt that every single skeleton that was found underground there had no skulls. That meant that the people who buried the bodies had revisited the graves and disposed their skulls.
Another great experience that they had in Vanuatu was learning about the Lapita pottery. Getting to see and touch this ancient object was quite fascinating for Oscar; it was very exciting to be holding what our ancestors might have used or eaten from in the past thought Oscar. Looking at the patterns really unlocked where the Samoan patterns might’ve come from. They were really similar to the patterns on Oscars arm and he had seen them before on the Samoan Tapa cloth.
The two most important places that they had stopped off at was Samoa and Mahia in Aotearoa. These places were important because this is where they went to reveal their envelopes to their families. This is also where they found out where there parents come from and who they were descended from.
Overall, it was a terrific trip for Nathan and Oscar. They found their journey quite successful because they accomplished what they had gone to do. They travelled to numerous countries and enjoyed looking and learning about each of the countries history.

Sweet as Poetry

Walt: Oral Language - analyse and adopt spoken texts with expression and confidence

This week in literacy we have still been carrying out our knowledge of poems and expressing ourselves more. We have learnt more about how we need to talk with expression, projecting our voice and making our words loud and clear.

Plays and Poetry

Walt:Analyse and adapt spoken text with expression and confidence

This week our focus is on plays and poetry. Our text is a play and we are learning how to be confident and speak clearly in front of an audience. I know I have achieved this goal when I am able to speak confidently in front of an audience and not hesitate.

Hundredths

Walt: recognize and understand hundredths

This week our focus is on decimals fractions and percentages. The main thing is actually decimals and the column we are learning to understand about is the hundredths column. We also have a key competency to focus on as well which is to competent thinkers. This key competency will be carried out until next week and I know I have achieved this when I am thinking carefully about the equations and making good decisions of who to sit with in class.

Thinkboard

As part of our learning we have to complete a google drawing called a Think board. A think board is basically just a diagram showing your thinking about an equation that our teacher gives us. Here is my think board, please leave a comment on this post if you have time.

Problem Solving

Walt: Solve problems with fractions, decimals and percentages.

This week we are still learning more about how to solve equations including fractions, decimals and percentages. The most difficult equation for me to solve was the last one of slide 8 which is the percents problem - 2.

Guardians of Our Culture

Have you ever heard of polyfest before? This is an event that is run in Auckland  and there are many performances from different cultures especially polynesians. Yesterday, the year 7 & 8 students from our school were really lucky to have a trip to the Polyfest.  I will give you more information about the Team 5 trip to polyfest yesterday.

There weren’t many stages on yesterday but there were a lot of stalls and most of them were food stalls. When we sat in line, waiting for our tour guides from Aorere College there were other schools sitting on either sides of us. When we meet our tour guides we were split into different groups before they lead us around the area.

One of the stalls we went to was the AUT stall where there was a man and a woman who talked to us about what we can learn about in the future at their University. I enjoyed this stall because one of things they showed us was an app that someone in Fiji created about the weather warnings because of a cyclone that hit their island years ago. I think this app was really helpful to the people of fiji because before they had it they had no way of knowing whether it would be a good day to go out or not. In the future I would like to help make a difference in New Zealand or even my own country; Tonga.

The purpose of our trip wasn’t only to have fun and enjoy ourselves but it was also to learn about our cultures and other companies that are sponsors for polyfest. Although there weren’t much performances from different schools, my favourite stage was the diversity stage. The diversity stage is where the Fijian, Kiribati, Tuvalu and many more small islands.

I think it is important to join your cultural groups for this event because it gives you more of an understanding of what your culture does and performs for traditional occasions. Next year I will be joining my culture group for polyfest so that I can learn more about our traditions. If you still don’t have a good idea of what your culture is about make sure you join next year if you are keen.

Decimals

This in numeracy our numeracy teacher gave us a task to complete a place value presentation with extra tasks in the slides. One of our tasks in the slide was to fill out a template of place value houses. This week we were learning to demonstrate use of knowledge about place value.

Ratios

This week we've still been learning to get use to ratios. To figure out the answer for ratios you need to use your multiplying skills. For example; there are 2 strawberry sweets for every 3 orange sweets in a bag of 30 sweets. How many strawberry sweets are there? Firstly you need to add 2 + 3 and it equals 5, then you figure out how to get to thirty by multiplying something with 5. So 5 x 6 = 30 and then multiply 2 and 3 with 6. 6 x 2 = 12 and 6 x 3 = 18 and the answer is 12:18

Brenda Martinez

This week our task was to create a presentation about Brenda Martinez and an article about her. One of the points I learnt in this article was that Brenda couldn't afford new running shoes when she was young and now she is donating shoes to kids from her sponsor New Balance.

Thinkboard

This week we have been learning how to add fraction. Here is an example of how to add fractions;
3/8 + 2/4 =, I can work this out by rewriting the equation. Firstly, I multiply the denominators, 8 x 4 = 32, now 32 will be the new denominator. Now you cross multiply, 3 x 4 = 12, that's the first numerator,
8 x 2 = 16 that's the second numerator. Now you add it up 12/32 + 16/32 = 28/32 the numerator is now the same so you don't have to change it when you add it all together.

Problem Solving

Walt: multiply and divide decimal numbers

This week the question I worked out was really tricky but I managed to give it a go and try an answer. My answer was 67.2 but I wasn't sure if it was correct. If you would like please have a go on trying to solve this problem and comment it below.

Week 7 Educreation

Walt: Use fractions

During week 7 & 8 we have been looking at fractions. As you can see in this video we have been learning to change in proper fractions into a mixed fraction.

We have learnt to change in proper fractions by dividing the denominator and the numerator. I think I was quite confident in working out the questions.

Problem Solving Week 7

Walt: Use Fractions

This week we've been focusing on fractions. We solved problems in presentation's that included fractions. We had to solve the problems showing our working out.

I have learnt how to figure out how to get the fraction for twelve brownies with nuts in it. Three brownies didn't have any nuts in it so I knew that the fraction was 1/5. The fraction for fifteen brownies is 5/5 and then I knew the fraction for twelve brownies it was 4/5.
