State Of Matter

Discussion Doc
States of matter

Task
Work on this Doc together with a partner or in a 3.

Give three examples of each state of matter?
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Wood
Water
Steam
Ice
Oil
Air
Stone
Blood
Helium

What’s the difference between the three states of matter?
Solids
Liquids
Gases
Solid molecules are close together and arranged in a regular way.
Liquids molecules are close together but not as tight as Solids molecules and not as.
Gases molecules do not touch. Their molecules are far apart from each other.

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you learned from this reading task.
We have learnt that molecules are the smallest particles can get. Another word for molecules is particles. The elements from the Periodic table are molecules. Some molecules from the periodic tables are natural and some have formed by mankind. More molecules are yet to be discovered.

FAST RUST

Fast Rust Task
Rust

Walt: synthesise information from multiple sources.

Task
Work on this Doc together with a partner.

What 3 ingredients are needed for rust to occur.
Metal
Oxygen from the air (O)
Water (H2O)

Write a brief paragraph explaining the rusting process (why rusting occurs)
When some metals are exposed with water and oxygen, it forms rust. Rust is a type of corrosion. Rusting occurs when H2O (water) and O (oxygen) is in contact with iron or steel. The rusting process becomes faster when salty water or acid rain is applied.

How could you prevent something from rusting?
By preventing metal from rusting you can paint it or put a layer of oil or grease over the metal. It is a good idea to use this as a solution so that the oxygen could bounce off the metal instead of rusting it, depending on what kind of environment  the metal is in.

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you’ve learned from this reading.
We learnt that the term corrosion is used to describe metal breaking down when it is exposed to the environment. We also learnt that rusting can be prevented when you either paint, grease/oil or a process called galvanizing. An example of galvanizing is when you put zinc and iron together, the zinc protects the iron but it sacrifices itself because zinc reacts more than the iron.

__________________________________________________________________________
In this task I learnt about rust and how metal can corrode. Rust is a type of corrosion, corrosion happens to metals when they are exposed with water and air for a long time. Rust slowly breaks down metals into other chemicals. Another name for rust is hydrated iron oxide.

NZ Current Reports

In this week's task for literacy, my group Ruapehu had to search for a any Olympian who was eliminated for anti-doping.

Ratios

This week we've still been learning to get use to ratios. To figure out the answer for ratios you need to use your multiplying skills. For example; there are 2 strawberry sweets for every 3 orange sweets in a bag of 30 sweets. How many strawberry sweets are there? Firstly you need to add 2 + 3 and it equals 5, then you figure out how to get to thirty by multiplying something with 5. So 5 x 6 = 30 and then multiply 2 and 3 with 6. 6 x 2 = 12 and 6 x 3 = 18 and the answer is 12:18

Thinkboard

This was our equation for our Thinkboard this week and as you can see, it is a subtraction equation.

Thinkboard

For this weeks thinkboard we learnt how to add decimals. I solved the problem using the strategy partitioning.

Sentence Types

What kind of sentences do you use for your writing? I use to always use simple sentences before I knew there were two other kind of sentences. Now that I have learnt about the three sentence types I can now mix them up in whatever writing that I do.

Chicken-leg Effect

Have you heard of the chicken-leg effect? The chicken-leg effect is when, if you go to space your legs start turning skinnier because of the zero gravity.

Brenda Martinez

This week our task was to create a presentation about Brenda Martinez and an article about her. One of the points I learnt in this article was that Brenda couldn't afford new running shoes when she was young and now she is donating shoes to kids from her sponsor New Balance.

Thinkboard

This week our thinkboard was a subtraction equation and the strategy I used to solve the equation was partitioning.

Thinkboard

For this weeks thinkboard we have learnt to multiply decimals. As you must have already noticed, when you multiply decimals the answer is smaller than the equation.

Thinkboard

For this weeks thinkboard we have been focusing on fractions. Also in thinkboards we don't just show how we get our answer, we also have to write ten other similar equations.

How do I prepare my Body & Mind for Sport.

This week we've been learning how to prepare our bodies and minds for sport. In this presentations you'll find some tips that you might want to try to keep a healthy body and mind.

Be the Inspiration

Here is a presentation that I have completed with two other people in my home class. It includes inspirational quotes.

Olympic Athletes

This presentation is just about athletes that I have researched for fun and it includes disqualifications, young athletes and good country representatives.

Silicon Valley Advice

\This morning we were inspired by two Tamaki College senior students; Saia and Gabriel. They were two of ten people who were chosen to visit Silicon Valley in America and explore some of the common companies.

All ten of the people who went were male and were students from different colleges. Ten people from different schools are chosen every two years by Andrew Paddison and there's an age limit which is year 11. Saia & Gabriel inspired us and motivated us to reach for the top, go for goal and set your mind to what your looking forward to in the future.

Olympics Narrative

Writing:
As the crowd chanted in unison, the eight competitors from all around the world had briefly started warming up. When the contestants were signaled to settle into their starting positions, silence filled the stadium. All eight competitors had immediately put on a serious and eager face.
Bang! The crowd broke out of their silence mode and started roaring with excitement as the official shot the starting pistol and the racers had sprung out of their starting positions. As they rapidly approached the finish line, their eager facials had vanished when the race official had notified that six competitors had false started and only two had made it into the finals.
With disappointed impressions the six participants walked out of the stadium, when suddenly the crowd started chanting with anger. “Retry, retry, retry!” The race official stood there looking speechlessly at the mad audience and not knowing what to do. As the crowd continued shouting loudly for another round, the official had no choice but to restart the race. _________________________________________________________________________________WALT:  This week in literacy most of our focus has been on writing. Our task was to find an image about the modern Olympics and write a narrative about it. There are three types of sentences that we needed to include in our writing; simple, compound and complex.

A Bumpy Road to Rio

In this presentation you'll find that we have been learning about what it takes to get into the Olympics and it's a really hard journey.
