Can apes really understand sign language?

Walt: Find evidence in a text
Use the process of elimination to find the 'best fit' answer

This week our task was to read a text called Koko and collect as much information as we can to complete this google presentation. This text was about an ape that was taught American sign language. While reading this text I found out that people argue with the teacher of this ape of whether Koko actually understands sign language. What I found interesting was the fact that apes have so many similarities to human.

The 3 Kete of Knowledge

This week the whole of team five worked on the same task. We did this because our challenge was to keep putting more things into our 3 kete of knowledge every time we come to school. If you don't know what the three kete of knowledge are then there is a link to on the google presentation that you can look at. Or just take a look at the poster below.

A Life-like Dream

Jamie was laying in bed sleeping, she was in a deep dream but she thought it was real life. In her dream Jamie was with her parents, she stayed very close to them. Her ‘Life Like Dream’ was set in a dark forest but there was only a stiff light ahead of them.

Later on her parents suddenly disappeared into the shadows of the forest leaving behind a foam. As soon as her parents disappeared she panicked, she tried following the light that was ahead of her but as she got closer the light seemed to be going farther and farther away. One of her biggest fears were dark forests especially when she was alone in one.

Soon she started calling out for her parents “Mum, Dad!” As she was yelling in her dream, she was also yelling aloud. Her parents heard her, they ran straight into her room and when they saw that she was having a nightmare they woke her up. When Jamie woke up she sighed in relief and she pinched herself in case she was still dreaming. Jamie looked at her parents and hugged them as tightly as she could they both smiled at her then hugged her back.

Algebra

Walt: solve algebraic equations
For this task we had to work with algebra. Do you know what algebra is? Well if you don't, it is a letter or a symbol that represents a number. In this presentation you will see a lot of different letters that represents numbers.

i luminate

IMG_0471 (1).JPGIMG_0460.JPG

Last Tuesday a few people from an amazing and really talented dance group came and performed to Pt England. The name of their group was ‘i luminate’ the actual word is illuminate it means making darkness brighter. They came all the way from the USA to perform at schools in New Zealand. Only three people were able to come and perform for us their names are; Mat the tall one with the checked shirt, Danny the other male and Lisa the female.

As I sat in the hall and watched them in amazement while they had their costume on I wondered what they looked like without it on. When they removed their costume at the end of the show I could see which was which. The choreography of their performance was really spectacular & their attitude of when they danced was enthusiastic and on point.

When ‘i luminate’ performed to us they wore special costumes that could turn on & off during their dance routine. Their costumes were able to do this because it was programmed by something called LED. LED is like a computer chip that emits visible light when an electric current passes through it.

I really enjoyed their performance and I hope that next time they come they would be able to come with more of the crew. Here is a short clip of them dancing.

Attitude Speech

Last Wednesday a man named Nate from 'Attitude' came to Pt England to talk to the team 5 students about the different personalities and how to be ourselves. Nate had the personality of an otter, otters love to do things the fun way.

There were four different animal personalities that Nate spoke to us about there was; an otter, lion, golden retriever and a beaver. Nate told us a few stories and one of them was about him trying to fit in just by playing sports to receive a blue jacket. Instead it turned out that he had a bump on his forehead and it made him look like an angry unicorn.

A few things I learnt from Nate was to help others, make the right decisions, your future depends on what kind of friends you play with and also to be yourself. I am really looking forward for the next time that a member of 'Attitude' comes and does another speech for us and teach us more about getting to know our own personality.

Alphabet Addition

This week is similar to last week because we're still trying to get used to alphabet additions.

Alphabet Addition

In this activity I have learnt to use the alphabet in numbers. Each letter represents a number for example A + B = 22 because A = 10 and B = 12. You can have a try and you could also teach others too.

Problem solving

Walt: add and subtract decimals

This week my we have still been learning about decimals. We can use many different strategies for solving problems in adding and subtracting decimals. In this presentation one of my stratigies were 0.07 - 0.04 = 0.03 + 0.4 = 0.43 because the question was 0.47 - 0.04.
